I guess time flies when you’re having fun as the last 5 weeks have just buzzed by.   The puppies are all doing well and are irresistable…  it’s hard to not spend every minute of the day with them.    They are spending more time awake and are very curious about the world around them.   This week we added some cedar shavings to their weaning pen area which they have enjoyed very much.    It has helped to keep things a bit fresher and makes clean-up a bit easier although the shavings are pretty much tracked from one end of the house to the other now.   Needless to say if the puppies look covered with “stuff” in any of the pictures in this week’s slideshow – that would be the cedar shavings 🙂   The puppies are also spending more time apart from Lovely(unfortunately part of the natural weaning process) and  are enjoying their feasts of real food 3 times a day.  They are all weighing in at over 7 pounds – in true golden style they love their food and never miss a meal !!    Lovely only feeds the puppies twice a day now (for a little snack) and is starting to return to better health after being pretty depleted from her little ones – despite our efforts to counter their demands with the very best nutrition.   I finally got to sleep through a whole night uninterrupted yesterday !!  So she must be feeling better…      There is no real dominant personality in the bunch yet – possibly because we do try to mix up the group a bit so they don’t spend every waking moment together.    Both the boys and the girls have very sweet and gentle personalities and seem quite happy no matter what new adventure we try to introduce them to.    We did try taking some show stance “Standing” pictures yesterday which proved quite unproductive since all of the puppies seemed like they would rather be laying down for a belly rub then standing for a photo.    Oh well….  We will try again next week.    I was thinking how nice it would be to live in a warmer climate where we could have explored the outdoors for a few minutes….  but for now our adventures will be limited to changing it up from the kitchen, to the living room, to someone’s bedroom…     The puppies continue to grow and learn and are becoming more beautiful every day.

Puppies at play

We had a busy day yesterday with 3 families coming to visit Lovely’s adorable puppies.    All the goldens were of course happy to see our guests and there were lots of hugs and cuddles to go around for everyone.    The puppies are starting to play with each other a bit more with each day and it is interesting to watch how they interact with each other.   They are all very gentle with each other and only last in their playtime a few minutes before they are fast asleep again.    Last night we set up a little play place for them which consists of a little “Playskool” baby tunnel with some hanging toys.   They were quite intrigued by the whole thing and were very eager to check it out.    We try to introduce them to as many new sights and sounds as are age appropriate so they can continue to grow into beautiful, well-adjusted, calm and sociable goldens for their waiting families….      Lovely had a bit of a tough day yesterday as she has just been exhausted by the demands of the puppies which are at their peak.    The puppies didn’t seem to mind giving mum a break for most of the day and enjoyed their feast of puppy mush and then more puppy mush…. They also had a much needed bath as they seem to wear more food than they eat right now.    No one seemed to mind the water and they all seemed to enjoy being snuggled in front of the fire to dry off.       They are learning and growing at an incredible rate now – it is fun to see their little personalities develop as they respond more and more to human touch and love every day.    🙂

They are all doing so well….   every day brings new adventures and a new awareness of the world around them.   We added the “weaning pen” section onto the whelping box yesterday – which is simply an additional 4 ft by 4 ft area where the puppies can explore and play.   This weaning area differs from the whelping area in that it is lined with paper and not blankets – and it is also the spot where the puppies receive their food and tend to do their “business”.   It is amazing that even after only a day – quite a few of the pups will specifically leave the blanketed area to keep it clean and leave their little deposits in the weaning area.   Lovely is cleaning up less these days and the puppies are getting bigger – so there is a bit more required to keep everything clean and everyone on track – but the pups have already established that they like the whelping box area clean – which is a great step towards house training already 🙂    (The pups still spend lots of time daily outside of their area also – usually in the living room – but the whelping box and weaning area are a safe place where they can play and interact when mum Lovely is outside, when it is time to eat or when we are not watching over them).  Of course who can blame Lovely for not wanting to be the sole source of food these days …. little puppy teeth erupted last Sunday and I can only imagine how painful the job of feeding hungry mouths must be for Lovely.    Fortunately all the pups have truly caught on to the art of eating real food – so Lovely’s workload is becoming less with each passing day.    The puppies are all tipping the scales at well over 5 pounds – so there is never a meal missed…    The newest development is that they are all begining to engage in play time with each other – pawing and nudging and just being cute little puppy bundles of fur.  They are just as adorable as ever and growing in leaps and bounds 🙂

happy-valentines-dayThe time just seems to be flying by as Lovely’s little ones grow before our eyes.   They have had a busy week – we completed our first round of “de-worming” (which is of course a necessary part of health care for every puppy) – which I know may sound like boring stuff but it was funny to see how each one handled having to swallow the liquid treatment (which I’m sure did not taste very good) for 5 days in a row !!    On a brighter and more interesting note – all the puppies had their first taste of REAL FOOD yesterday (I think Lovely especially was happy).   A definite milestone!! Rather than throwing down a bowl full of slop like some breeders do – I always prefer to make the first meal an opportunity for bonding.   It takes quite a bit longer but we start the puppies with a few bites of something called “Fresh Bites” which is probably the equivalent to a mushy meatball with beef, chicken and veggies mixed together.    Using a small portion (which I mush up even more between my fingers) it is soft enough that the little ones can handle it without teeth – but they must take it out of my hand which teaches them already at this young age that gently licking a human’s hand is a really good thing !!  Mr. Blue in particular has really caught on to the whole real food experience !!  I think he would order a full plate of meatballs if he could.   We will still be doing “slop” at some point soon – but for the first few days I like the bond it creates when you feed by hand.    We also changed everyones’ ribbons this week as the inital ones were becoming too small.   Boy are they growing !!   All the pups are weighing in now at around 4 and a half pounds !!    No featherweights in this bunch !    Lovely continues to take very good care of all of them – although she is starting to spend less and less time in the whelping box – probably because it is getting pretty crowded in there.     We’ve been giving the pups a bit of exploration time on the living room floor outside the “box”   but they sure don’t go too far….  they are all still trying to refine the art of walking on all fours at once.    They continue to be the center of attention and the shining stars of our home!!   We are enjoying every single minute of loving them and watching them grow.   As I hold each one I wonder what kind of adventures lay ahead with their new families and find great satisfaction in knowing they will bring immense joy into every single life they touch!!    I am sure we will have another exciting week ahead as they become more sure-footed and begin to explore the wonderful world of food.    🙂

The puppies have reached their 2nd week birthday !!  They are all as sweet as sugar and very easy to love !!  They are all becoming more mobile with each passing day – Mr. Gold discovered how to crawl out of the whelping box yesterday 🙂  so we have graduated to using the little gilly-door to keep them all safely in their own space.    All puppies are weighing in at between 3 pounds 9 ounces and 3 pounds 11 ounces – I’m not sure exactly what Lovely is feeding them but it seems to be working !!   They are all BIG eaters and the sounds of suckling puppies at mealtime drowns out everything else in the room.     I think Lovely will be glad to get some relief in another week when they can slowly start dining on some real food !     Each one has opened their eyes – although they can’t really focus in on too much yet at this stage.    Within the week they will be able to hear also – their whole world is just beginning to unfold.     I have posted new puppy photos on the website today – so hopefully everyone will get a good idea of how things are moving along.   All the two-legged fans love them dearly (some of the other pooches still don’t know quite what to think of them) and they are quickly becoming the most loved and snuggled puppies in the universe.   More updates soon….

I can see clearly now… (almost)

img_0670Well the puppies have made it through their one-week-old birthday party and are well on their way to celebrating two weeks old on Saturday.  Miss Pink decided since she was the first born she should set the pace by opening her eyes today.    I know things are still terribly blurry and out-of-focus from her perspective – but just being able to look deeply into her little puppy eyes adds a whole new dimension to our day.   Mr. Black’s eyes are also starting to open (not to be outdone by a girl!) and I’m sure the rest will follow shortly.  ( I’m convinced Miss Pink just didn’t want anyone to beat her to the punch – she takes her responsibilities and role as first born quite seriously)   🙂  They are all becoming quite mobile – their little front legs are quite strong and a few of the puppies are trying (albeit a bit awkwardly) to support their weight on all fours !!   It won’t be long now and they will be racing for the milk wagon whenever Lovely enters the room !      They continue to steal our hearts and amaze us with their sweet personalities.
